LACROSSE 101
Lacrosse is a very physically demanding sport that requires not only fitness but also good stick work. It is a full contact team sport, played on a field roughly the size of a football pitch. The object of the game is to score more goals than your opponent, by shooting the ball into your opponent’s goal.
The game, which has Native American origins, is played using a small solid rubber ball and a long-handled racquet, called a lacrosse stick. The head of the lacrosse stick is strung with loose netting designed to catch and hold the ball.
The sport of lacrosse is a combination of basketball, football and hockey. Anyone, big or small, can play lacrosse. The game requires and rewards coordination and agility, not brawn. Quickness and speed are two highly prized qualities in lacrosse. An exhilarating sport, lacrosse is fast-paced and full of action. Long sprints up and down the field with abrupt starts and stops, precision passes and dodges are routine in men’s and women’s lacrosse.
There are currently over 50 nations competing internationally in men’s lacrosse, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, Spain, Switzerland, Italy, and others.
